  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Reverend James Egan Moulton (1841-1909) was a Wesleyan Methodist missionary who left Sydney in 1865 for Tonga, where he became founding Principal of Tupou College the following year. An influential missionary and teacher in the islands, he completed a Tongan translation of the Bible in 1902. He returned to Sydney in 1906. He had married Emma Knight in Melbourne in 1864. One of their seven children, James Egan (Jnr) (1869-1937), a Methodist minister, also served in Tonga. In 1896 he married Fanny Alice Corner, daughter of the Reverend Kirton A. Corner. Alice Hope Dickson was a daughter of Rev. James Egan and Fanny Alice Moulton. Helen Hollings is great niece of Rev. James Egan Moulton (Snr).

    H. G. (Harold Geoffrey) Cummins is a former Australian missionary who went to Tonga in 1966 to carry out educational work with the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga (Methodist Church of Tonga). He was for a time Principal of Tupou College. On his return to Australia in the early 1970s he began research on Tongan history. In 1977 he commenced work on a biography of the Rev. Dr James Egan Moulton (1841-1909), which resulted in his Ph.D. thesis, 'Missionary chieftain: James Egan Moulton and Tongan society, 1865-1909 (ANU, 1980). The Moulton family papers had been given to Dr Cummins by Alice Hope Dickson and her sister Phyllis Hamper.
