  Presbyterian minister John Dunmore Lang (1799-1878) was a dominating figure in colonial society. A radical, republican, newspaper proprietor, minister and politician, Lang's controversial social and political battles earned him respect and vituperation in equal measure.
  Lang, adept at self-promotion, sat for many Sydney portrait painters. The circumstances of the commissioning of this portrait are not known, but it does not seem to have been in Lang's personal possession. Reference: Backler & Friends exhibition, State Library of New South Wales, 1999.
