Charles Chan, (1916-1996) was born in Darwin of Chinese parents. Mr Chan left for studies in Shanghai when he was 12. He graduated at 21 in civil engineering and after a customs training course, worked with Shanghai Customs. Post-war political upheavals in China forced him to return to his family in Australia in 1947. From 1950-1981, he was a Senior Traffic Officer for Ansett. He was fluent in four Chinese dialects, and used this to assist overseas passengers and Chinese visitors travelling to Australia. He gained accreditation from the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI), and was Government and Court Interpreter.
