  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Douglas Hope Johnston was born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1874. He was the great grandson of Lieutenant-Colonel George Johnston who arrested Governor William Bligh in 1808 and assumed control of New South Wales. He was the founder of the Australian Pioneers' Club in Sydney and the New Zealand Founders' Society in Wellington. He was an avid collector and promoter of information and pictorial material relating to Arthur Phillip and in 1924 he began a 'Governor Phillip Recognition Movement'. This led to the erection of a memorial to Governor Phillip outside St Mildred's Church, Bread Street, London in 1932. He died in 1957.
  • Scope and Content
This collection consists of notes and illustrations for a work to be entitled 'The Founder of Australia : Admiral Arthur Phillip, R.N. (1733-1814) his times, work and character' by D. Hope Johnston. Only one memo book, however, together with the captions to the illustrations and a few annotations to the notebooks are in Hope Johnston's hand; the remainder are in the hand of W.K.J. Allan who appears to have been his research assistant at the Admiralty Library. The work was apparently not published and only 2 chapters are amongst the papers. It is possible that work was discontinued on account of the publication of George Mackaness' biography in 1937.
The volume was to include much material on London, Lyndhurst, the Navy and British Sea Power at the time of Phillip. The illustrations reflect this and the greater part are of London, Greenwich, Bath, ships etc. The notebooks contain extracts from printed books mainly on London, Frankfurt, social and political England and notes of searches in British public records relating to Phillip's career and family. These are taken from books published on Phillip prior to Mackaness' work (such as Becke & Jeffery, 1899).
