  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Nina Gertrude Barden-Hoffman (1915-1999) journalist, wrote for the Spectator, Wentworth Courier and Sydney Morning Herald. Nina was Nola Dekyvere's secretary in 1956. She married Roy Spencer Barden in 1940, and Eric Sydney Hoffman in 1975.

    In 1996, she was awarded Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for service to the support and promotion of charitable organisations, particularly as a journalist.

    Nina was the daughter of Henry Gilbert and Clara Gertrude Gilbert (nee Brown). Henry Gilbert was founder and proprietor of Gilbert Bonded and Free Stores in Pyrmont and served in the Navy. He married Clara Gertrude Brown in 1914.

    Her grandfather, Robert Henry Thomas (d. 1879), was as a ship surgeon in the Royal Navy, and settled as a doctor in New Zealand. Nina is also a descendent of explorer Sir Humphrey Gilbert (1539-1583)
