  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

William Leslie (1770-1857) was the tenth laird of Warthill in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. In 1813 he married Jane Davidson (1783-1861) by whom he had seven children - William, Patrick, Mary-Anne, Walter, George, Catherine and Thomas. In 1835 Patrick Leslie (1815-1881) arrived in New South Wales where he learned sheep farming mainly from the Macarthurs of Vineyard before taking over the management of 'Collaroi', a station owned by his uncle Walter Stevenson Davidson near Cassilis. In 1839 he was joined in New South Wales by his brothers, Walter (1818-1891) and George (1820-1860). In 1840 Patrick travelled overland to the Darling Downs in Queensland on the advice of Allan Cunningham. He was followed by Walter with their flocks and they took up an area which became Canning Downs and Toolburra stations, thus becoming the first European settlers on the Downs. In the same year Patrick married Catherine Macarthur, daughter of Hannibal Hawkins Macarthur and Anna Maria (nee King), and in 1847 George married her younger sister Emmeline (1828-1911). In 1844 Patrick moved to Brisbane leaving Canning Downs to be run by Walter and George. However in 1847 Patrick returned to the Darling Downs when he bought Goomburra Station. Until the mid 1850s when Patrick sold Goomburra, the Leslie brothers were the leading settlers on the Downs. Patrick moved to New South Wales and then to New Zealand where he settled on the Waikato. He returned to Sydney in 1879 and died at Milsons Point two years later. In 1854 George, who had contracted tuberculosis, sold Canning Downs and, with Emmeline, sailed for England where he died childless in 1860. Emmeline stayed in England and in 1865 married Captain Vigant Falbe, a Danish sailor.
