Alternative Publishing Co-operative Limited (APCOL) was a small independent publisher established in Sydney in 1975. It sought to develop an exclusively Australian book list and provide an alternative to the multinational control on book publishing in Australia. APCOL's co-operative structure underpinned its independent status. Book lovers were encouraged to take out shares in APCOL and to become involved in all aspects of its operations.

From 1975 to 1989 APCOL produced a quality list of titles, particularly in non-fiction. It became a leading publisher of books on Aboriginal issues. In the field of auto/biography it published Stan Arneil's One Man's War (1980), his best-selling account of being an Australian prisoner of war under the Japanese. One of APCOL's few fiction titles was Amanda Lohrey's critically acclaimed political novel, The Morality of Gentlemen (1984). David K. Cleaver resigned as Manager in December 1993 and Kitty Knight was Chairman of APCOL when it ceased trading in 1998.
