John Henry Waldo Heney, journalist, was born in Sydney in 1899, the eldest child of Thomas William Heney (1862-1927), and his wife, Amy Florence, nee Gullett. During World War II he served as a second lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards and was gassed at Villers Pol in northern France in November 1918. He married Irene Mary Gliddon at St John's Darlinghurst in 1929; she died in 1974. That same year he established Heney Feline Care Service which advocated and performed the sterilisation of domestic dogs and cats. He had worked on a number of city and rural newspapers, chiefly The Farmer and Settler from 1944 until it ceased publication in 1957. T. W. Heney was editor of The Sydney Morning Herald, 1904-1918, and had two other children, Lucy Beatrice Amy and Helen Margaret Elizabeth Heney (1907-1986).

John Heney's Journal is partly an autobiographical account and largely a commentary on life and events reported in the mass media from 1971 to 1982.
