    James Peter Franki had a distinquished engineering career in New South Wales. He served his time as an engineer with P.N. Russell and Co. of Sydney, graduationg from the drawing office and engineer's workshops. Later he was appointed assistant manager at the Mittagong Ironworks, and when these were closed, became assistant engineer for Mr. Faviel, who was engaged on a large contract for the construction of bridges and the railway between Sutton Forest and Goulburn. He was then appointed chief draftsman for McArthur & Co., predecessors of Mort's Dock and Engineering Co., and subsequently was promoted to assistant manager and after the death of Mr. McArthur, was appointed manager in 1869. He held this position until 1923. The business covered 17 acres at Balmain, and 18 acres at Woolwich and Jubilee Docks. Various other businesses were also operated as part of the company which at times employed over 1,600 workers. According to the Australasian Who's Who of 1908, Franki figured prominently in the development of the NSW engineering industry. Franki died in 1924.

    1 Jul. 1872; Deed of Settlement of Mort's Dock and Engineering Company, including a schedule of shareholders, number of shares held by each and their signatures
    22 June 1922; Address presented on behalf of the citizens of Balmain by the Mayor, Bertie Wheeler and Town Clerk, A.W. Sommerville. The address is in the form of a scroll: ink on parchment with a gold embossed leather cover lined in watered silk.
