  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

George Wyndham and his wife Margaret, nee Jay, emigrated to New South wales in 1827, arriving in Sydney in December of that year. The couple settled at Branxton in the Hunter River valley, named the property Dalwood. At Dalwood the Wyndhams began experimental farming, including viticulture. Some of Wyndham's shiraz vines planted at this time were still fruiting in 1966, believed to be the oldest wine-producing vines in the world. Dalwood's wines were internationally acclaimed, receiving many prizes and trophies at local and international exhibitions. George and Margaret had thirteen children, eleven sons and two daughters. Both George and Margaret died within three months of each other in 1870. Their son John appears to have become responsible for the Dalwood property and wine making enterprise.
