  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Francis Grose (1758?-1814) arrived at Port Jackson in February 1792 as Lieutenant Governor and commandant of the New South Wales Corps. He was in charge of the colony for two years following Arthur Phillip's departure in December 1792. He returned to England in December 1794. He later made two unsuccessful attempts to return to the colony as governor.
  • Scope and Content
Contemporary copy of a letter headed: 'Letter from Major Gros Deputy Governor NSWales, Sidney 2nd April 1792'. Grose gives a flattering view of the colony, asserting that 'the whole place is a garden' and 'nothing is wanting here but oxen and black cattle'. The letter was copied for circulation at the time. Grose wrote a similar letter on the same date to Evan Nepean, Under Secretary of State in the Home Office. The letter to Nepean is reproduced in Historical Records of New South Wales, vol 1, part 2.
