Phyllis Albina Bennett was born in 1906 at Mullumbimby and educated at Grafton High School and Sydney University. She taught at Grenfell and Fort Street Girls' High before being appointed to Gosford High School in 1936, where she taught English and was Supervisor of girls. While teaching at Gosford, Phyllis studied part-time for the Art Teachers' Diploma.

After lecturing in English at Sydney Teachers' College, Phyllis retired in 1962.

Phyllis was rewarded for her work on the committee to establish Gosford Library by being issued Borrower's Card No. 1. She was instrumental in forming the Central Coast Arts Council, and founded the Gosford Players in 1970.

She was an Arts Council tutor, held classes on English Literature and the creative arts at community college, and served for 17 years on the committee working for the Gosford City Art Centre to be established at Caroline Bay.

In 1978 Phyllis was made a Member of the British Empire, in recognition of her services to the arts.
