    Henry Chamberlain Russell was born at West Maitland, New South Wales, in March 1836. He graduated from the University of Sydney in 1859 and was associated with the University for the rest of his life, eventually becoming Vice-Chancellor. In 1870 he was appointed the Government Astronomer, in which position he observed the transit of Venus in 1874. He published widely in the field of astronomy. Russell was also a meteorologist and a pioneer of weather forecasting in Australia, and he was interested in applying photography to astronomy. He was a member of many scientific organisations, became a Fellow of the Royal Society, London, in 1886 and was awarded a C.M.G. in 1890. -- The Australian Encyclopaedia.   • Scope and Content
    1856; Handwritten receipt from the University of Sydney for the sum of two pounds paid by Mr Bourne Russell for the matriculation of his son, Henry Chamberlain.

    1857; Certificate (in Latin, with translation) issued for completing the second year of studies in Arts at the University of Sydney.`

    1874; Sepia photograph, together with an enlarged black and white copy, of astronomers observing the transit of Venus. Photograph inscribed on reverse "Lord Howe Island".

    1890; Citation for membership as Companion of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George.

    1870-1912; Correspondence relating to the appointment as Government Astronomer, to the admittance into the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, and to membership of the Royal Society. Also a letter received by Mrs Russell after the death of her husband.

    1887; Circular bronze medal, diameter 6.5 cm, inscribed in Dutch "In honour of 40 years fruitful academic work, 1847-1887" (Located at R 895)

    1890; Russell's C.M.G. Medal (Located at R 896)
