    Carl Harbaum was born in Berlin in 1924, and migrated to Ausralia in 1952. He married an Australian and they have three children.
    Carl Harbaum is a public accountant. He has held the positions of Vice Chairman of the Ethnic Communities' Council of NSW, Honourary Treasurer of the Federation of Ethnic Communities' Councils of Australia, Chairman of the St Christophorus Homes for the Aged Association, Chairman of the Committee for the Promotion of the German Language in Australia, and served on the Syndey Opera House Trust until 1989.
    In 1978 Carl Harbaum was awarded an MBE for services to ethnic communities in NSW. In 1993 he was awarded `Das Grosse Verdienstkreuz des Verdienstordens der Bundesrepublik Deutschland', one of Germany's high honours.
    Carl Harbaum and his wife live in Sydney.
