  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Black and White Committee, was first established as the Women's Auxiliary of the Royal Sydney Industrial Blind Institution in 1937. In 1936 a committee was formed, under the presidency of Mrs Eric Sheller, to run the White Ball in aid of the Institution. Members of the 1936 committee established the Women's Auxiliary which elected the Pastel Ball Committee in 1937, again under the presidency of Mrs Sheller. In 1938 a Pink and Black Ball Committee was elected, and in 1939 the Auxiliary elected a White Ball Committee. During World War II the Auxiliary did not hold an annual ball but resumed in 1946, holding a White Ball in 1946 and 1947. In 1948, under the presidency of Mrs Nola Dekyvere, the first Black and White Ball Committee was formed and the name of the committee has remained unchanged to the present time. In 1953 the name of the Royal Sydney Industrial Blind Institution was altered, by Act of Parliament, to the Royal Blind Society of New South Wales. The Black and White Committee remains closely associated with the Royal Blind Society and has raised a considerable amount of money since 1937 to support the activities of the Society.
