  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Philip West (1947-1994) was most likely one of the first underground countercultural journalists in Sydney. He published Psychedelic Stir and similar small magazines and newsletters from 1967. He later edited the Alternate News Service both in Australia and from overseas as well as being the first publisher to document the Pentagon Papers controversy in book form. In the last years he worked as a night news editor at SBS dealing with international stories

  • Scope and Content
    This collection includes papers concerning West's involvement in various overseas and Australian underground press publications such as Psychedlic stir and Alternate news service; marijuana; Vietnam War protest movements; literary papers relating to his book, Vietnam : the history of a war-stricken country and his unpublished The Vietnam crisis; and photographs of speakers in the Domain, Sydney and of the 1966 Australian visit of US President Lyndon B. Johnson
