The Riley Street Infants School began in 1874 in the Congregation Church Hall in Devonshire Street, before opening in Riley Street (Surry Hills) in 1884. It is thought that the school was the first in New South Wales to successfully implement the German Froebels Kindergarten system.

The Riley Street Infants School was closed at the end of 1989 despite strong resistance and campaigning by the Parents' and Citizens' Association.
