• ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
  
  Ivan Kobal escaped from the Communist zone of Allied-occupied Slovenia in 1947, arriving in Australia in 1950. He commenced work as a labourer on the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme in 1955 and went through a succession of jobs until he left in 1958. Brief stints of leave in Sydney, chiefly staying in a boarding house in Newtown, brought him into contact with his fellow compatriots. A Roman Catholic, he was a member of the Holy Name Society and regularly assisted various Yugoslavian and Australian priests in celebrating Mass.
