    Laurence Lillingston Whistler Street, chief justice and lieutenant governor of NSW, was born in 1926, son of Kenneth and Jessie Street. He was educated at Cranbrook School and the University of Sydney. He was admitted to the NSW Bar in 1951 and appointed Queen's Counsel in 1963. He was appointed judge in the Supreme Court of NSW in 1965. He was appointed chief justice of the Supreme Court of NSW and lieutenant governor of NSW in 1974. Laurence Street was appointed K.C.M.G. in 1976. He retired from the Supreme Court in 1988 and as lieutenant governor in 1989.
