Joseph Carlos was born in Ireland in 1867. He obtained an MA in Dublin before emigrating. He lectured in Latin and Greek at the University of Sydney, becoming professor at St. John's College before being called to the Bar. Carlos worked on matters of arbitration before the foundation of the Arbitration Court. He chaired boards which made early awards for road workers, shop assistants and some manufacturers. Carlos was married to Winifred. He was interested in Home Rule for Ireland, and was an active Roman Catholic layman. He died in Sydney on 31 March 1917.

This notebook size copybook is a reversal of a normal copybook. The carbon copies have been removed, leaving the original pencil entries. Although it is reputed to contain letters sent to a colleague in Ireland, the entries are dated but not addressed to anyone. The book contains 100 pages. Joseph Carlos writes at length about the evicted Irish tenants in Sydney in 1891, the shearer's strike in Queensland, the general election in New South Wales and the Federal Convention held in Sydney in 1891. He discusses the problems that Irish immigrants encountered in Sydney at the time and general economic and social conditions.
