  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Geoffrey Chapman Ingleton (1908-1998) was a maritime historian and eminent hydrographer who in his early life was an officer in the Royal Australian Navy. He reached the rank of Lieutenant-Commander. Ingleton's diverse interests were always centred on things maritime. He was a cartographer, author, artist, etcher, ship modeller, book collector and publisher. He acquired an enormous collection of books and periodicals, maps, photographs, ships' log books and nautical charts. The collection was culled and parts were sold in the 1970s, and other portions were auctioned in the 1990s. Ingleton was meticulous and kept all his correspondence, including letters to book publishers. His correspondence with the successful Australian marine painter, Oswald Brett, spans many decades.
