  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Oswald Mingay was born at Peak Hill, NSW, in 1895. He was educated at Lithgow District School and then joined the Post-Master General's Department where he was employed, 1908-1922; he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in 1915 and served on the Western Front. He was married in 1920 to Winifred Esdon (d.1971) with whom he had a son, Colin. In the mid 1920s he formed Mingay's Wireless Manufacturing Ltd, and in 1930 established the Australian Radio College. In that year he also became the managing editor of 'Radio Retailer of Australia', which he later bought after forming the Mingay Publishing Co.; his other publications included 'Broadcasting Business' and 'Mingay's Electrical Weekly'. He was a founding member of the Institution of Radio and Electrical Engineers, Australia in 1932. During WWII he served as a signals officer in the 1st Cavalry Division, and then with the Ministry of Munitions. In 1961 his publishing company was sold to the Thompson Organisation, Ltd, London; he retired from business in 1965. In 1972 Mingay married Theodora Lippmann (nee Wills); he died at home in Sydney the following year. [Source: Jim Symes' article for the Australian Dictionary of Biography]
