McAuley was involved in a number of significant activities in Australian political and cultural history: one of the originators of the Ern Malley literary hoax, 1944; lecturer at the Australian School of Pacific Administration, 1946-1960, where he won an international reputation for his writings on New Guinea; involvement in Catholic Church politics relating to the Movement and the establishment of the National Civic Council in the 1950s; and founder and editor of the cultural and political journal Quadrant in 1956.
