Ross Edwards, composer, was born in Sydney in 1943. He studied at the NSW State Conservatorium, then with Peter Sculthorpe and Richard Meale at the University of Sydney, and with Peter Maxwell Davies and Sandor Veress at the University of Adelaide. His compositions received early recognition when they were selected for performances at the ISCM festivals in Stockholm (1966) and Basel (1970). In 1970 he moved to England for further studies with Maxwell Davies. He taught at the University of Sydney from 1973 to 1976 and at the NSW State Conservatorium from 1976 to 1980. Since then he has chiefly worked as a freelance composer.
Edwards has received numerous commissions, residencies, fellowships and awards. The Australia Council awarded him the Don Banks Fellowship in 1989-90 and the Australian Artists Creative Fellowship in 1990-93 and 1995-1997. In 1993, he won an APRA and an ARIA award. Edwards was awarded the Order of Australia in 1997.
