  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Wallace Deane (1878-1952), Methodist cleric and author, was born in Mudgee, N.S.W. on 3 Februrary 1878. On deciding to pursue a career in the church, Dean studied privatley to achieve his matriculation. He continued studying while a Probationer, graduating with a Master of Arts with honours in Philosophy from the University of Sydney and later with a Bachelor of Divinity from London University. Deane spent 6 years in Fiji as a missionary. On his return to N.S.W. Deane worked in a succession of local circuits and his last appointment was as principal of the Methodist Ladies College, Burwood, 1940-1948. Deane held a number of positions within the government of the Church, including Presidencies of the Bathurst, Parramatta and Second Sydney Districts, as well as the highest office of President of the Conference. Active in the temperance movement he was President of the N.S.W. Temperance Alliance, 1931-40. Deane published 6 books and was married to Elsie, nee Danks. He died on 12 February 1952.
