  • Scope and Content
    1 scrapbook of 57 leaves in black leather elaborately blind-embossed cover, also with gilt embossing at corners and edges, all edges gilt; elaborate gilt-embossed borders on front and back endpapers, which are covered in crimson watered taffeta.

    The album consists of pictures, poems and miscellaneous ephemera. It appears to have been started by George Milner Stephen, and given to his wife Mary (nee Hindmarsh, daughter of the Governor of South Australia, 1836-38) at the time of their marriage in July 1840. George Stephen inscribed some of the drawings, either with his own initials 'GMS', or those of his wife 'MS', or with the name of other artists, eg 'GTWB' [ie G.T.W.B. Boyes].     3a.[Portrait of John Montagu]. Attributed to George Milner Stephen. John Montagu (1797-1853) was Colonial Secretary in Van Diemen's Land, 1835-1842
    5. [Portrait of man in turban], watercolour with gum arabic. Inscribed lower left in the hand of GMS 'Miss Jean'
    6. [Rocky foreshore], pencil. Inscribed lower left 'Mrs Chapman'
    11. [House with trees], pencil. Inscribed lower left 'Mrs Chapman'
    12. [Sydney looking across Farm Cove from Mrs Macquarie's Chair], monotone wash with pencil. Initialled lower left 'GMS'. Shows from left Palmer's Mill, the Government Stables and to the right, the Governor's Bathing House and Fort Macquarie
    13. [Dutch fishing boats], watercolour. Inscribed in ink lower left and right 'Painted in 1810 [by] G.W.B. Boyes'
    15. [Country landscape scene], watercolour beneath image 'Lieut Hill RN'
    17. [Lake scene], sepia wash. Inscribed in pencil beneath image 'Mr Thompson'
    18. [Yachts and other vessels, Adelaide?], watercolour. Inscribed in pencil lower right beneath image 'M Stephen'
    18a. [Tropical scene, possibly India], ink drawing. Signed and dated by the artist lower left 'W.R. Thomas 1854' [i.e. William Rodolph Thomas]
