Anne Ringwood (1924-1998) was an ABC radio news journalist for 35 years, at a time when journalism was largely dominated by men. She produced Report from Asia for 21 years. She was born in Albury and her parents James and Ellice Ringwood were farmers.

Anne got her first job as a journalist when she was 16 on the Border Morning Mail in Albury in 1940, because most of the men had gone to war. In 1949 she moved to Wagga Daily Advertiser and then to Sydney Morning Herald. She was the only woman on the general reporting staff. Until 1960’s women were always confined to the ‘Women’s Writers’ departments. Anne declined an offer by news editor Angus McLachlan to stay on at the Herald and went into free lancing some jobs for the ABC. In 1957’s, she resigned after being denied the opportunity to work on the ABC’s London, but was later given the job.

Anne returned to Australia in 1960 and became senior cable subeditor, although she was qualified fit be chief sub editor of news. In the years in which she produced Report from Asia, she travelled to India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and was the first foreign reporter to enter China through the south.

After her retirement in 1984, Anne worked as a volunteer in wildlife rescue and bush regeneration in Ku-rin-gai and at the Botanic Gardens Herbarium. She also worked as a dedicated campaigner in the struggle against depredations of the community and residential environment of the north shore. Before her death, Anne donate a portion of her land to Lane Cove Council
