  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Iris Mary Hordern, nee White, daughter of Walter David White and Mary, nee Hodge, married the Rev. Frederick Hugh Hordern, son of Edward Carr Hordern of Hordern Brothers, Sydney, on 12 November 1914. They had six children, Mary, Iris Noel (known as Noel), Hugh, Marsden, John and Ian. Iris Noel Hordern married Hugh Darling in 194-. They lived on their property, Battery Hill, on the Breeza Plain near Gunnedah, N.S.W., which was sold in 1998. They had two daughters, Jill and Robin.

    Walter D. White, 1857-1941, public servant and writer, was born in Bristol, England, where he worked on a newspaper. He journeyed to South Africa in 1882 and then to New South Wales in 1884, where he held several positions in the public service, including Secretary to the Parliamentary Committee on Public Works, ca. 1897, and as an Inspector of Schools. As an Inspector of Schools he travelled throughout rural N.S.W., often contributing prose and poetry to local publications as well as to the metropolitan press. White married twice, firstly to Mary Hodge with whom he had three children, Norman Underhill, Stanley Underhill and Iris Mary White. After Mary's death from cancer he married his second wife, Louise. There was no issue from the marriage. White died in Sydney in Arpil 1941. His grandson, Marsden Carr Hordern, edited a volume of White's verse which was published in 1968.
