  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Colleen Clifford (1898-1996), actress and director, was born in Taunton, Somerset, England. She was the daughter of a British Army officer, and started performing at the age of three. She had early success as a pianist and graduated from London's Royal Academy. Her career in theatre included cabaret, variety shows, broadcasting with the BBC and later, war concerts. After her marriage in the early 1930's to Air Commodore Douglas "Jerry" Blackford, the couple moved to the United States of America. In 1954 Blackford died of a heart attack, and soon after Clifford, who never had children, moved to Perth, Australia. She taught drama and voice production and founded the Theatre Guild of Perth. In 1969 Clifford moved to Sydney and continued to appear in films, on the stage and on television. She was very well known, not only as an actress, but also as a teacher, writer and director. She was a devout Roman Catholic and daily went to Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral. Clifford continued to work right up until her death.
