  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Mann, Capt. Gother Kerr (1809-1899) surveyor, engineer and army officer arrived in Australia in 1836. In 1838 he married Mary Hely and set up practice as an engineer. After being listed as insolvent in 1844 he found employment at the Department of Royal Engineers and was appointed captain and commandant of the first Volunteer Artillery Corps raised in the colony. In 1852 he commenced work on Cockatoo Island as directing engineer. There he was responsible for all penal and civil building design work on the island. He moved to the island in 1858 and the following year became superintendent. A major achievement of his work on Cockatoo Island was the design and construction of Fitzroy Dock. He retired in 1870 and moved back to Greenwich House. -- Reference: The Dictionary of Australian Artists/ Joan Kerr. Melbourne : Oxford University Press, 1992
