  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

In 1828 Thomas Hassall (1794-1868), Anglican clergyman, owned or leased a number of properties including 'Lampeter' at O'Connell Plains, Bathurst and 'Denbigh' at Cobbitty. From 1788 onwards, successive governors of the Colony ordered musters to be conducted in order to determine details of the population. Returns were periodically sent to the British Government to provide information necessary to calculate the quantity of food and supplies required for the Colony. In 1828 a Census Act was introduced in order to regulate and legalise the collection of information concerning the population. Census information was also collected in 1833, 1836, 1841 and 1846. From 1851 onwards, all colonies were required to conduct a census. The muster roll of Thomas Hassall is an example of the information collected and provides a useful insight into the makeup of Thomas Hassall's household.
