Thomas Hassall (1794-1868), Anglican Clergyman, son of Rowland and Elizabeth Hassall, sailed for England in 1817 in order to study for the ministry. There was no facility in Australia for theological study at that time and Thomas Hassall was the first candidate for ordination from Australia. Thomas Hassall's journey to England took ten months. He studied at Lampeter College, Lampeter, Wales and was ordained in 1820, shortly before his return to Australia in 1822. His return to Australia was precipitated by the unexpected death of his father Rowland in 1821. During his time in England Thomas Hassall kept careful records of his income and expenditure in a small notebook which he continued to use after his return to Parramatta. - Scope and ContentCash account book of Thomas Hassall, being a small notebook with manuscript entries recording details of cash received by and cash paid to Thomas Hassall. At one end of the volume there are pages of accounts for individuals with whom Thomas had financial transactions with including: Thomas Hancox, Charles Marsden, George Stokes, David Jones, and Thomas Davies. At the other end of the volume each page records the date, details of the transaction, and amount of money paid or received.
