- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
James Hassall (1802-1862), landowner and farmer, was born in Parramatta, fourth son of Rowland and Elizabeth Hassall. In 1816, James Hassall received a grant of land at Cobbitty which he called 'Freshfields'. James Hassall owned land at O'Connell Plains near Bathurst in 1824 which he later sold to his brother Thomas. In 1832 he purchased the property 'Matavai' at Cobbitty from his brother Jonathan. James Hassall also owned extensive lands at Boorowa. At the age of 33 James Hassall married Catherine Payne Lloyd (1817-1894) with whom he had ten children. During the 1840s James Hassall was affected by recession, floods, a bank collapse and a reduction in the availability of cheap convict labour. He sold his stock and property and travelled overland with his family to Geelong, Victoria, where his niece Catherine Hope lived with her family. He first leased a property, 'Lake Wallace' from Robert and Catherine Hope, and in 1855 established 'Wotong Vale' near Coleraine, Victoria, where he died in 1862. - Scope and ContentLetter book of James Hassall, being manuscript copies of letters sent and copies of some letters received, mainly concerning business matters and transactions. Letters are written from Parramatta and later 'Matavai'. The last few letters in the volume are from 'Wotong Vale' in Victoria, some sent or received after the death of James Hassall in 1862. Letters discuss business matters including the sale of bales of wool from James Hassall's properties, usually shipped to an agent in London and sold at auction; the sale, purchase, and leasing of property; copies of an application for convict labour; listing of properties owned by James Hassall (1836); listing of convicts currently employed by Hassall, including the convict's name, ship, and trade or occupation; and copies of letters concerning financial transactions. The end of the volume contains narrow portions of each page used as butts for receipts or vouchers issued to individuals for goods and services; each butt includes a number, name, amount, goods or service, and date of issue (1844-1846).
