    Thomas Hassall, letters received, 1810-1821, include letters received from family and friends prior to his departure for England, and letters received during his stay in England and Wales from family and friends in England and Australia.     File 2: Hassall family, correspondence, volume 3, pp. 669-1202, 1819-1822

    Correspondence, being letters received by Thomas Hassall, 1819-1822, and including one draft letter sent, 1821. Letters received mainly while Thomas Hassall was in England and Wales from family and friends in both Australia and England. Letters reflect Thomas Hassall's life in England and during his time studying in Wales, and give an insight into his circle of family and friends. Thomas Hassall maintained contact with the Hassall and Hancox families and other connections of his parents.

    Letters include those received from family at home, in particular his sister Mary Cover Hassall (later Mary Lawry). Letters from home included news from James Bradley, a former employee of Rowland Hassall who established his own Sunday School; and from James Byrnes, a Sunday School teacher who reported in 1820 that the Paramatta Sunday School founded by Thomas Hassall now included '133 Children and 16 Teachers'. Also included is a letter, 1 September 1820, from Edward Eagar, informing Thomas Hassall of his father's death on 29 August 1820 after a two week illness with 'an affliction of the Lungs'. Later letters from family and friends express sympathy, and some regret that Thomas Hassall is leaving England for Australia. Thomas Hassall was involved in the Lampeter Sunday School while studying at Lampeter College and there are a number of letters from students expressing their gratitude to Thomas for his kindness and their regret at his departure for Australia. There are various letters from people requesting that Thomas should carry parcels and letters back to family and friends in Australia. Correspondents include James Bradley, Mary Hassall, Susanna Hancox, Ann Hassall, Lucy Hassall, Jonathan Hassall, Walter Lawry, George Burder, James Byrnes, Edward Eagar, and Reverend John Youl.

Hassall (2), 1833; Lucy Hassall (10), 1828-1835; Thomas Hancox, 1828; Robert Mackay Campbell, husband of Ann Hassall, 1828; Reverend Thomas Redall, 1828; William Shelley (4), 1828-1834; William Smith (13) an employee, 1828-1835; William Walker (6), 1829-1835; Catherine Hassall, ca. 1840; Ann Hassall (1808-1891) (2), n.d.; William Pascoe Crook, n.d.; Jonathan Hassall, n.d.; Henry Cox, n.d.; George Cox, n.d.; and Henry Byrnes, writing to inform Thomas Hassall of the death of a shepherd, Bromley at the hands of the local Aborigine people and describing the attack on the shepherd's huts, n.d.

    James S. Hassall, letters received, 1835-1888, includes letters from family and friends. There are a number of undated letters and some fragments along with a few papers including: a printed set of accounts of St Matthew's Church, Sherwood, Brisbane, 1888, with a list of subscribers to the Church Stipend Fund; an albumen photo print of Reverend James S.
