    John Garling Hurley (1906-1989) was born at Bondi, N.S.W., the only child of John Hurley (1844-1911), a former State parliamentarian, and his third wife, Annie Elizabeth Garling. He joined the Australian women's undergarment manufacturer Berlei Limited in 1921. He became an assistant to the company's founder Fred R. Burley, who with his brother Frank Arthur Burley had formed Unique Corsets Ltd in 1912 which became Berlei Limited in 1920. Hurley served with Berlei (U.K.) Ltd from 1931 to 1936. He returned to the firm's Australian operations and rose through the executive ranks, becoming General Manager of Production, Merchandise, Design and culminating his career in December 1969 as Managing Director.

    Hurley was knighted in 1967 for services to industry, government and the community. He had led the 1957 Australian Trade Mission to India and Ceylon. He was elected Life Member of the Chamber of Manufactures of N.S.W. in 1980. Among his cultural commitments he was Chairman and Trustee of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, and Vice Patron of the 1788-1820 Association.

    Hurley married, in 1929, Alice Edith Saunders; they had three daughters, Rosemary Elizabeth (b. 1932), Diana mary (b. 1928) and Anne Garling (b. 1944). Alice Hurley died in May 1975. He married, secondly, Desolie Minnie Richardson, a former Berlei colleague, in December 1976. Lady Hurley had been Chief Executive Designer for Berlei Group of Companies from 1954 until her retirement in 1970.
