The following entry is taken from Communism in Australia: A Resource Bibliography (1994), compiled by Beverey Symons with Andrew Wells and Stuart Macintyre:
Murphy joined the CPA in early 1975 while a student at Macquarie University. He was elected to Macquarie University's Student Council in 1975-76 and became a NSW organiser for the Australian Union of Students in 1977. From 1981-86 he lived in Adelaide and worked as a marine steward. He returned to Sydney in 1986 to become coordinator of Tribune and work as a CPA Sydney Organiser; he was a member of the CPA Sydney District Committee in the late 1970s and the late 1980s, and a National Committee member from 1989-91.
