Samuel Race Lewis, Hatter, and his wife Mary sailed from London on the ship 'Ida' in 1854. They settled in Victoria, in the Geelong area. Mary Lewis died in 1904.

Richard Race Lewis, son of Samuel Race Lewis and Mary Lewis, was born in Geelong in 1860. He married Ada Mary Prowse ca. 1889. Lewis was best known as the Promoter and Organiser of the Sydney Expansion Scheme, a plan to use Sydney's waterways to alleviate traffic congestion, in part by linking the Parramatta and Georges Rivers by way of a canal. Lewis died in 1934.

Jack Edward Lewis, a grandson of Richard Race Lewis, attempted to have the Sydney Expansion Scheme reactivated in the 1960s.
