  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Charles Turnbull Harrisson was born in Hobart, Tasmania, in ca.1868. In 1911, he became a member of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914, and was appointed to the staff of the Western Base Party as a biologist and artist. This party, under the leadership of Frank Wild, consisted of 8 men. They were landed on the Shackleton Ice Shelf in the vicinity of the Queen Mary Land, Antarctica, by the S.Y. Aurora on 15 February, 1912. Harrisson accompanied Wild on his main eastern sledge journey, as well as taking part in several others. He remained at the Western Base, Shackleton Ice Shelf, until 23 February, 1913, when the party was relieved by the S.Y. Aurora. On his return, Harrisson was appointed to the position of biologist with the Commonwealth Fisheries Bureau, Australia. He was assigned to the Commonwealth Fisheries Investigation Ship, Endeavour, which disappeared with all on board on 3 December, 1914, shortly after leaving Macquarie Island, Southern Ocean
