Sydney Ancher (1904-1978) studied at the Sydney Technical College (1924-1929) and worked as a draughtsman with Prevost, Synot and Ruwald. In 1929 Ancher was awarded the Australian Medallion and Travelling Scholarship from the NSW Chapter Board of Architects and spent 5 years travelling and working in Europe and England. He returned to Sydney in 1935 and accepted a junior partnership with RA Prevost in 1936. He later became a founding member of the architectural firm Ancher, Mortlock, Murray and Woolley. Ancher also devoted much time to the education of younger architects.

  • General note

Reference: An Australian identity : houses for Sydney 1953-63 / Jennifer Taylor. Sydney : Dept. of Architecture, University of Sydney, 1972 (p.17)
Anecdotal evidence suggests that Ancher thought this house one of his finest works (see ML 20/99). The donors of these plans sold the house in the late 1980s. Not long after it was demolished, and another residence built on the site.
