William John Stewart Mckay was a gynaecologist and one of Australia's most prolific medical writers, who also had a great interest in horse racing. He often went by Mr. or Dr. Stewart McKay.

Stewart McKay was born in 1866, fifth child of Charles McKay (1822-1896) and Ellen (Gilbert) McKay (1836-1922), at 15 Lang Street, Church Hill (Sydney).

W.J. Stewart McKay was the first medical student to take the Bachelor of Science course at the University of Sydney. Following this, he entered medical school in 1887.

He worked overseas, before returning to Sydney. In 1895 he was appointed to the Lewisham Hospital, where he remained as Senior Surgeon until 1932.

Dr McKay moved to Lismore in February 1933.
