  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Hazel Rose Jones, nee Webber (1921-1989) was a lifelong campaigner for social justice who became a leading activist of the anti-Apartheid movement in Australia. Born in Kenya to Anglo-Australian parents, she was educated at home and in England. She came to Australia in 1939 and settled in Sydney. By the late 1940s family commitments had interrupted her studies at Sydney University and her training to become a social worker. By the early 1950s she had been left a widow to raise three infants. Hazel subsequently undertook fitful employment as a bookkeeper. From 1964 until her retirement in 1981, she worked as a news librarian at John Fairfax & Sons Ltd, where she chiefly indexed the Sydney Morning Herald.

In 1960 the Sharpeville massacre, near Johannesburg, South Africa, impelled Hazel to the forefront of anti-Apartheid activism. She joined in solidarity with a small group of recently-arrived South African emigres to protest against their government's policy of racial apartheid. In 1967 she became a founding member of Friends of Africa in Sydney, and with whom she held various offices. She joined the Executive Committee of the Southern Africa Defence and Aid Fund (SADAF) in December 1970. She served as both Honorary Secretary of SADAF and of its successor, Southern Africa Group of Community Aid Abroad (Australia) (CAASA), until it folded in 1987.

Hazel Jones' other community and political activities included membership of the Communist Party of Australia, from which she resigned in 1973, and of the East Villawood Progress Association of which she was Secretary. She was appointed Justice of the Peace in the late 1960s. In the mid-1970s she was Treasurer of World University Service in Australia. At the time of her death, Hazel was Records Manager of the Mandela Foundation in Australia.
