  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Australian and New Zealand Congress for International Co-operation and Disarmament was held in Melbourne, Victoria, 7-13 November 1959. The Congress formed the Australian States Peace Committees for International Co-operation and Disarmament to carry on its work. This included the New South Wales Peace Committee for International Co-operation and Disarmament. The State Peace Committees convened the Australian Congress for International Co-operation and Disarmament, Sydney, 25-20 October 1964. This Congress disbanded the State Peace Committees and established state associations to continue and extend its work. This included the Association for International Co-operation and Disarmament (N.S.W.).
The inaugural meeting of the Association for International Co-operation and Disarmarment (N.S.W.) was held on 16 March 1965. The original constitution was drawn up in 1964 and the object of the Association was 'to seek world peace through internatioonal co-operation and total world disarmament, subject to effective inspection and control'. A.I.C.D. (N.S.W.) changed its name to People for Nuclear Disarmament (P.N.D.) at a special general meeting held on 30 October 1983. The new constitution recommended that the new name include '(Incorporating A.I.C.D. and its affiliates)'. Over the years these affiliates have included N.S.W. Peace Committee, Women in Solidarity for Peace, Vietnam Moratorium 1971, National Anti-War Conference, Australian Peace Movement and many have now ceased operation.
