Becker and Kaup were lifelong friends and went to school together at Darmstadt Gymnasium in Germany. Kaup was employed by the natural history museum in Darmstadt and Becker had illustrated some of Kaup's scientific works. Becker's letters contain his natural history observations, mainly in Tasmania - Language
