  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Gebels family migrated to Australia from Austria in 1950. The family included Dr Gustav and Lisel (nee Tode) Gebels and their four children Lisel, Gustav, Helmut and Kurt. They settled at Eastern Creek, N.S.W.
Gustav and Lisel were actively involved in German and other cultural community programmes in Sydney. They were instrumental in founding the German Australian Student Exchange Programme and establishing the German Physical Fitness Medal (Deutsche Sportabzeichens). They were variously active in the German Evangelical Lutheran Church in Australia (Deutsche evangelische-lutherische Kirche), the Committee for Promotion of German Language, the German-Austrian Society of Australia Ltd (Deutsch-oesterreicische Gemeinschaft Australiens), and in promoting the need for a nursing home for German speakers (Altersheim), and in the wider German community.
Lisel taught German at Sydney University for many years. Gustav died in 1994.
