  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The hut was formerly the "Mount Kosciusko Meteorological Observatory" or "Wragge's Observatory Hut", set up by the Queensland Government Meteorologist, Clement Lindley Wragge. It was completed on Sunday 17 April 1898 by Cooma builders, brothers Arthur and Herb Mawson, and building partner D. McArthur. It operated until July 1902 when the Government withdrew funding. The Tourist Bureau took it over and it burnt down on Christmas Day 1913, possibly due to lightning strike.

The party of 25 including 5 women, left Jindabyne on 29 December 1906 and stayed overnight at Betts’ Camp. On 30 December 1906 they travelled from Betts’ Camp to the summit of Mount Kosciusko where Larry Harnett recited, “The Man From Snowy River.”
