  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

In 1812 Captain Joseph Moore commanded the Mary Ann on a voyage to Sydney where he sold a general cargo before setting out for the 'sperm fishery'. On his return to England in 1815 he transferred to the Cretan which he sailed to Sydney again and then on a whaling voyage in the South Pacific. Between 1817 and 1820 he made a voyage in the Coquette of which the details are unknown. In February 1820 he took command of the Woodlark and made another voyage to Sydney and the South Sea whaling grounds. He never returned to England, but settled in Sydney where he brought up a large family. He continued in command of the Woodlark for the mercantile firm of Jones, Riley and Walker until 1825 when he joined the firm. In 1834 he received a grant of 40 acres at Mosman Bay. He died in 1857. His eldest son, Henry Moore, also joined Jones, Riley and Walker and became a well known Sydney merchant and ship owner. In about 1840, together with his father, he bought the wharf at Miller's Point, which for the next 60 years was known as Moore's Wharf. (Reference: J.M. Watson. 'Australian Mariners of the Past - An Old-Time Whaler', Scottish Australasian, March 1918).
