  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Joseph Henry Barsden was born in Horsham, Sussex, in 1799. He left England as an infant with his convict mother on the ship 'Speedy'. After his mother died on the voyage, he was left an orphan. Barsden went to sea at the age of 13. After several years in Eimeo in the Society Islands, he eventually returned to Sydney where, in 1821, he married Mary Ann Blackman. In the 1830s he kept a store and the Kelso Inn at Kelso near Bathurst. He died at Kelso in 1873.
  • Scope and Content
ca. 1836; Autobiographical account of events 1799 to 1816. Barsden recounts that after arriving in Sydney as an orphan in 1800 he was befriended by Governor Philip Gidley King and Mrs. Anna Josepha King, and later by William and Elizabeth Paterson. He includes observations about people and society of the time, especially those connected with Government House, Parramatta. Aged 13, he ran away to sea serving on the Brig Active, then the Brig Trial on a voyage to Tasmania and Macquarie Island. The account describes his impressions of places visited including Port Dalrymple and Hobart. In 1814 he left for the Pacific on the schooner Endeavour, visiting New Zealand and Tahiti. After a stay on the island of Eimeo (now Moorea, Society Islands) near Tahiti he married the daughter of a chief and took part in the battle which restored Pomare II as ruler of the Society Islands. At the end of 1815 he joined a voyage to Tonga, Fiji, Batavia, Manila, Macao, Kamchatka, San Francisco, Valparaiso and Hawaii. He returned to Eimeo. Barsden writes a detailed account of customs on Eimeo and neighbouring islands. The account breaks off in 1816. (Call No.: MLMSS 7279 )
