Jane New was originally transported to Van Diemen's Land and was given special authorisation by Lieutenant Governor Arthur to accompany her husband, James, to Sydney. It was alleged that Jane New was illegally detained at the Female Factory at Parramatta. Court proceedings ensued regarding her confinement at the Factory and her indictment under a repealed statute. -- Reference: Dowling, Select Cases, Vol. 2, Archives Office of N.S.W., 2/3462, Supreme Court of New South Wales, Online Oct. 2003. - Scope and Content31 July 1828 - 19 July 1830; Report, notes on opinions, and correspondence that relates to the case of Jane New. Some of the correspondence is addressed to Francis Forbes, James Stephen, and George Murray.
