  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

In 1826, the privates Joseph Sudds and Patrick Thompson deliberately committed theft in the expectation that they would be transported, a fate they believed to be preferable to continued service in the army. Lieutenant Governor Ralph Darling, Governor of N.S.W., commuted their sentence to a flogging and assignment of seven years hard labour in the chain gang. Sudds was critically ill and died five days after the punishment was inflicted. The newspapers condemned the Governor's actions as illegal and reported the incident stridently.
Captain Robert Robison of the Royal Veterans, was stationed at Newcastle and was married to the daughter of Judge John Stephen. Robison disapproved of Governor Darling's regime and planned to lodge complaints against Darling in London. The Governor subsequently court martialled Robison for insubordination and a number of other charges to which he was found guilty as sentenced to be cashiered.
