In 1917 Tunks graduated from the University of Sydney in Medicine, and in April 1918 was commissioned as Captain in the Army Medical Corps, A.I.F. He travelled to Europe in 1918 on the troopship 'Borda', and returned after the cessation of hostilities on the troopship 'Berrima' in 1919.
